Cupcakes in Fair Lakes

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Finally!  Northern Virginia has a cupcake shop all it’s own.  Of course we have a CakeLove location in Tyson’s but the walk-up counter just isn’t the same as this cute little cupcake store.  Plus, the cupcakes are to die for!  Self-admitted to be cupcake snobs, Cupcakes, Actually just came to Fairfax Corner in Fair Lakes.

Mmmm…who could resist these yummies?

Next time you’re in Fair Lakes, check them out!  They’re near REI, across from Caribou Coffee.  Tell them we say hello!

Congratulations, Amy & Alex!

When I first met with Amy and Alex, the first thing I noticed was Amy’s quiet personality and Alex’s robust sense of humor.  Amy explained that she wanted a ‘French Countryside with an English Garden’ feel for the wedding.  Alex and I joked about having a helicopter transport them from the reception James Bond-style.  While we didn’t quite end up with a helicopter, I think we certainly achieved the European aura that Amy was looking for.

The pair chose Trinity Episcopal Church mostly based on it’s European feel.  While this building was built in the 1950s, it’s style is based on 12th and 13th century churches in France.  Trinity’s campus boasts a number of other buildings including an antique greenhouse and the nation’s smallest lending library.  Here’s the main church building:

Inside the church, the touching ceremony takes place.  Unfortunately Trinity doesn’t allow photographers or videographers to get closer than the front doors but our vendors made the best of it.  I’ll be interested to see how Colin from Blue Sky Films and Mark from Rodney Bailey Photography captured the ceremony!  Here’s what I got from my angle:

As a quick note, did you know that Blue Sky Films offers Super 8 film instead of traditional video?  They can mix it in with traditional video, too, so your whole wedding isn’t shot just on film.  Amy chose to have some segments of the wedding captured on Super 8.  Check out a sample here.

Meanwhile at the reception, my assistants Julie and Felicia were busy setting up the tent at Historic Long Branch.  This venue was new to me although they’ve been doing weddings for years.  Located in Millwood, Virginia, it has a robust history and some of the most serene views of the rolling Blue Ridge Moutains I’ve seen at any wedding venue.  The house is open to docent-led tours during cocktail hour and the reception must be under a tent.  Although it was a bit hot this past weekend, the Sheila Macqueen-designed gardens were blooming beautifully and the view simply cannot be beat.

Amy chose purple and ivory as her wedding colors.  We used a lavender cotton on the cocktail and service tables and a plum pintuck on the guest tables.  Select Event Rentals provided the tent and Party Rental, Ltd. brought the chairs, linens, and china:

The escort cards even had a French flair to them.  Each card was held by a pewter fluer-de-lis holder.  Unfortunately they kept blowing over since the event was outdoors.  We ended up having to lay them down on the table but I think they still looked cute:

:::WishTip::: Color-code your place cards if you are offering your guests a meal choice.  At this wedding, purple, white, and green signaled Pork, Chicken, or Fish to the wait staff.

Unfortunately the cake table sat empty most of the night.  It was too hot to display the wedding cake inside the tent.  The buttercream icing starts melting and doesn’t keep the cake layers sturdy.  At 92 degrees, there was no chance this cake would’ve made it three hours outdoors!  While dinner got underway, the cake remained in a semi-air conditioned corner of the basement.  We moved it out right before the cake cutting ceremony but even by then the layers were starting to wobble a bit.  I decided to alter the schedule a little bit before the cake smushed into itself.  Yet one more reason why having a wedding day coordinator is a good investment.

Carolyn at Taylor Made Cakes did a beautiful job on this cake.  I’m impressed that it lasted as long as it did which means she’s had experience at building structurally sound cakes.  It’s hard to see but there is a lace detail all around the bottom of each layer.  It was gorgeous!

Back inside the tent, a closeup of one of the taller centerpieces.  Maryam at Maryam Flowers was a rockstar for this wedding.  We’ve worked with her several times and she never misses a beat.  I especially liked the old-style European stands she brought instead of the typical glass trumpet vases:

These cute lanterns served as the short centerpieces.  Maryam made three small tulip arrangements for each table.  It’s hard to see but each tulip bunch is wrapped in purple wire.  It was such a small touch but shows Maryam’s attention to detail.  This image shows the true colors of the table linen and the chivari chair cushions.  Amy printed these pretty table cards, named after chateaus in France:

Tom at Pineapple Alley Catering provided the fabulous food and attentive wait staff.  I snuck a leftover hors d’oeuvre from the kitchen and was really blown away.  I had no idea an onion tart could be so sweet and savory!  Tom even worked with Amy and Alex to get European beer and wine for the wedding.  If you’re looking for a caterer, working with Pineapple Alley was truly a pleasure all the way around.

Here’s one last shot of the wedding taking place.  I apologize for the cruddy BlackBerry camera quality.  I like this image because it shows the beautiful purple tent swagging that Eric at Frost Lighting did.  I don’t have any photos from the rest of the night but the whole tent glowed purple through the evening and really came alive once the sun went down.  You can just barely start to see the effect of the pinspots on those tall centerpieces towards the back.  It was gorgeous!

Although the weather was a bit on the toasty side (I came home with a sunburn), the ceremony was heartfelt, the scenery was gorgeous, and the newlyweds were smitten with each other.  Just how a wedding should be!

Special thanks to Jodi, Julie, and Felicia who helped me out at this gorgeous wedding.  More kudos go to Aaron from Chris Laich Music Services who kept the dance floor packed all night long and rolled with the schedule changes I threw at him!  It’s always wonderful to have an attentive and professional emcee on the microphone.  One last shout out to Dan at Reston Limousine who arranged for two limos, three shuttles, and one sedan with no hiccups or delays whatsoever.

Amy & Alex, it was truly a pleasure working with you over the better part of this past year.  I really enjoyed being a part of your wedding day and wish you both the best of luck in your lives.  I’m sure we’ll see each other soon.  Congratutulations!

WishCandy: Kids Say the Darndest Things

Anyone who has spent any time with me knows, I am a SUCKER for little kids.  Toddlers in particular, but really, any little kid will do.  I find them hilarious and adorable.  Now, I understand those who choose not to have children at their wedding, and I completely respect that decision.  But for me, kids are part of what makes a wedding.  They love weddings, dancing, eating, and just generally being the cuteness that they are!  I, for one, was a VERY in demand flower girl when I was little (unlike my sister, who was asked once to be a flower girl and proceeded to run down the aisle at the end of the ceremony yelling “Daddy I have to PEE!!!!“)

Anyone who asks little ones to be in their wedding should be VERY aware that kids can be VERY unpredictable.  They can seem 100% gung ho about being a flower girl, look into the church to see 200 expectant faces staring back at them, then refuse to go down the aisle.  Or they can start crying.  Or they can run down the aisle, exclaiming the needs of nature calling.  You just never know what they’re going to do.  So, my advice is always two-fold.  First, bribery seems to work fairly well.  Normally this isn’t a child rearing method I would advocate but the Maid of Honor holding a candy necklace to be given to the ring bearer at the end of the aisle?  I’ve seen it work with my own eyes!  The other bit of advice?  Don’t sweat it.  If they don’t want to go down the aisle, don’t make them.  Let them go, have their mom or dad be prepared to come get them, and move on…they’ll still look adorable at the reception like the little ones below (as always, if I haven’t noted the photographer, please let me know if you know the source!)

I love this adorable hair wreath by Ariella Chezar:

It takes a bold little man to pull off a seersucker shorts suit; I think this dude does it with panache!

Justine Ungaro (the unbride) chose these AMAZING tutus for her ladies (Photography by Greg Gibson):

If anyone knows where these ADORABLE blue and green dresses are from, let me know…I might need them for my imaginary wedding (Photography by Jennifer Dery):

Jasmine Star takes the most amazing photographs every time, although this little one might have helped out.  I love the idea of kids ringing bells for the wedding.  My sister (formerly of “I have to pee” fame) had two bell ringers go down the aisle right before her, saying “The Bride is Coming, The Bride is Coming” in their little Southern accents.  It was great!

I can’t decide what’s cuter in this next photo from Gerber + Scarpelli: the ring bearer’s flipped up hairdo or the band-aid on his knee!

Cute kids?  Check.  Hot car?  Check.  Shoes?  Um…

Too…much…cuteness…can’t…handle…

These gentlemen look so dapper in their tan suits, don’t they?  (Not to mention, hello, I’m coveting the brides gorgeous hair)

I LOVE tutus for flower girls!  There’s an adorable store in Del Ray, VA called The Purple Goose that sells tutus in any color you can imagine.  I bought one for my friend’s one year old just because I thought she’d love it!

And finally, this little one combines two of my favorite things: Little girls in tutus and Chucks!

Are you having kids in your wedding?  What will they wear?

The New W Hotel in DC

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

The historic Hotel Washington was closed down last year and is reopening as the W Washington DC!  Slated to be ready in July, this hot property is in a fantastic downtown location at 15th & Pennsylvania.  Those of you who know that Mr. Obama lives at 1600 Pennsylvania realize that this hotel is right in the middle of things.

Mariam Karim is the new Director of Catering and has shared a few sneak peeks of the hotel & meeting space.  Keep in mind these are only renderings but they should be pretty close to the real deal.

The Dining Room (aka ballroom?):

The Living Room (aka lobby?):

The Sky Terrace Bar (aka rooftop deck):

The W is actually one of the few places in DC with a fantastic view of the White House, Ellipse, and several of the famous presidential monuments.  While I’m not sure you could rent the bar area for a private event, you could most certainly have an afterparty there!

To schedule a time to see the space for yourself or inquire about holding a wedding there, email Mariam or call her at 202-661-2426.  Special thanks to Doreen at Engaged! Magazine for sharing this with us.

Continuing on the “My Best Friend’s Wedding” theme (her colors are purple and green, yay!), this week I’ve got some gorgeous purple bouquets for you!  Again, if you know the florist or photographer, and I haven’t noted it here, please let me know!

I love this first one…it could be used as a bridesmaids bouquet or even for the moms — it’s just so delicate and unique!

Photographer: Eclectic Images:

I love the antique look of this lavender bouquet…not to mention it probably smells AMAZING!

Photographer: Little White Dress; Florist: Mindy Rice Floral Design

This bouquet from Simply Blooms is so dark it’s almost black!

This bouquet of Dendrobium orchids, White tulips and hyacinth would be perfect for a spring bride’s bouquet!

I love that there are so many shades of purple — you can go from a pale lavender to almost black, and even a pinkish purple:

Does anyone know what this flower is called?  I have been in LOVE with this bouquet for ages!

This bouquet is from one of my favorite weddings of all time (of, you know, random people who I don’t know): The wedding of Nole and Andrew, photographed by the AMAZING Punam Bean.  Nole is the author of the gorgeous blog Oh So Beautiful Paper, and you can read all about her wedding and see more pictures here.

Love the addition of the peacock feathers in this one, as well as the simple gold ribbon wrap:

Fantasy Diamond Cupcakes from Mervis

Friday, April 17th, 2009

We all love diamonds and we all love cupcakes, right?  Well why not join the two together!  Mervis Diamond Importers had the fun idea to decorate yummy cupcakes with even yummier diamonds.  Check out their creations:

The cupcakes were expertly baked by Classic Bakery and the gorgeous photo is from our good friends at Labor of Love Photography.  According to the Mervis Blog, the center diamond is a 2-carat asscher-cut beauty.  It’s surrounded by eight other round brilliant diamonds.  This cupcake would run over $30,000 at retail!

Marcie & Steve’s Engagement Shoot

A few months ago we ran an engagement session giveaway from a DC-area wedding photographer, Rob Holley.  The lucky winners recently completed their photo shoot!  Here’s the gorgeous images that Rob captured:

It pays to read the WishBlog, doesn’t it?  Congratulations again, Marcie & Steve!

WishCandy: Green Bouquets

For years, I’ve been saving pictures from web sites of wedding things I love.  Whether it’s a pretty hairstyle, a beautiful bouquet, a unique centerpiece, I’ll save it.  Why?  I honestly have no idea.  Maybe for my imaginary wedding someday (George Clooney, I’m waiting for you to call!), maybe to give brides ideas, I’m not really sure.  My confusion is your bloggy goodness!

Starting today you’ll see a series called “WishCandy.”  I’ll post sets of things that I love (that are wedding related, unless you really want a post of TV shows I love, because really, I could go on and on…)  Unfortunately, I didn’t realize when I began saving images that I should probably note where the picture came from, so many of these are not credited because I simply forgot to note either who the florist was or who took the photograph or from what magazine it came.  So, if you see a photo you know, PLEASE let me know who took it!  We want to give credit where it’s due, either to the amazing floral designers out there or the photographer!

Today, in honor of my best friend’s wedding (my actual best friend, not the movie) I am posting green bouquets.  A lot of brides think there aren’t that many green flowers, or that a green bouquet will be all, well, greenery, and few flowers.  But just look and see what wonderfulness exists in the world of green flowers!  You will note that for most of these, I haven’t said the names of the types of flowers.  That’s because I am a flower moron.  I know, like, 5 flowers.  I have learned a LOT since I’ve become a wedding planner, but really, if you like a picture, just print it out and take it to your floral designer.  He or she will know what they’re looking at a lot better than I do!  I just look and say “Ooh, pretty” – which is what your guests will do too!

I love the purple and green together:

More purple and green, this time with a more eggplant shade.  I can’t decide which I like more!
